Top 5 tips of going to a trade show

Whether it’s the home show, garden show, wine and food festival or the outdoor adventure show, trade exhibitions can be fun for the entire family.  This past spring, we received two for one tickets online and enjoyed a day at the National Home Show and Canada Blooms.  While walking around, it was clear I had to write this post for everyone who loves a good trade show but are aching and frustrated by the end of the day. So here are my top five tips to make your trade show experience really work for you from the second you walk in, to the moment you leave.

1.)  Bring a backpack
You’ll be getting lots of informational materials like business cards, flyers, brochures etc. so bringing a backpack frees up your hand to touch the materials, push your stroller or hold your hubby’s hand. Most importantly, it’s way easier and more comfortable way to carry heavy materials on your back than to have it straining in your hand.

2.)  Wear comfortable shoes
You’ll be walking extensively, so do your feet a favour and make sure you’re not squeezing them into tight shoes or stressing them in high heels. Comfort is key to enjoying your day, so wear comfortable flats.  Trust me, your tootsies will thank you.

3.)  Don’t forget your water bottle and snacks
The price of snacks are a premium at these events, so bring your own munchies in your backpack. Munching away as you explore the different booths will keep your energy levels up.  Trust me, you’ll be happy you didn’t splurge on snacks at the trade show when you realize how much you’ll have to pay to replace your furnace or hot water heater.

4.)  Have a plan or focus for going
Do you want to work on your bathroom, backyard or kitchen?  It’s important to figure that out before you go, that way, you can spend more time visiting the booths are are integral to the success of your home project.  The last thing you want is to come home with fifty brochures for boiler systems when the major thing on your to do list this year is re-doing the backsplash in your kitchen.

5.)  Be open to new information and have fun
There are new sustainable products coming out everyday and the trades people at these events are privy to these new innovations. Asking questions at these trade shows is a great way to get suggestions and recommendations for your space.

What is your favourite trade show and what is your number one tip to make that outing exciting, informational and fun?

  1. Thank you for the tips as I found this very useful. Btw., I have finally gotten a chance to response to your award back in July. Sorry it took me this long but hey better late than never 🙂

    Take care,

  2. My favorite is the trade show for furniture. Mom and dad spends money on decorating the house since I was little so I enjoyed going out with them and look for new furnitures for our home. Me and my sis also enjoy trade shows for book and food..hihi! My number one tip to make the outing exciting is to try to visit everything in there and go with friends with similar interest(it’s really difficult to go around when the ones you’re with have different interests..hehe)

    • We are HUGE fans of our local furniture show too. Ours is called the Interior Design Show. I love ooo-ing and ahh-ing over all the cool new products out there. I never seem to leave with a sink or tiles etc. but I always leave with something from the food vendors there! 🙂
