Fashionista

I’m a former fashionista who is choosing to budget since I’m now a stay at home mom. However, does that mean that I should doom myself and my kids to a life time of fashion drabness? No, absolutely not! Please bear with me one minute while I get on my soap box…alright I’m ready, thank you for your patience. Now where was I, oh right…no, absolutely not! When I first had my daughter I would stroll along the hallways of my local posh mall checking out all of the adorable little outfits that you know she would rock. I would hold up Mexx Kids, Baby Gap and H&M Baby outfits with my mouth pursed and my eyes narrowed all in an attempt to find the outfits I liked the best. And let me be honest, it was completely and utterly fun!

Fast forward to the future, now I have two kids under three and there is no way I’m spending that kind of money on outfits anymore. However, just because money doesn’t grow on trees, it doesn’t mean a fashion conscious mama and her babies can’t look chic. So, I stay on top of what’s hot and instead of strutting down the halls of my local posh mall with a latte in one hand, pushing my red bugaboo stroller in the other (yes I do miss that life), you can now find me checking out second hand sales, mom to mom sales, craigslist and kijiji.

Armed with the seasonal trends seared into my mind, I leap and bound to alternative shops to save the fashion day for me and my kids. Which brings me to my point, if fashion is one of your passions, don’t let budget worries get in your way because there are ways to get fabulous fashion for less, as long as you’re creative. If you are buying second hand clothing like me, stand tall (chest out and butt tight) and remember what Lee Milton said, “people seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile”!

So here are some fashion inspirations that will take you through most seasons. Use this as your look book, then scour the country side to find these fabulous fashions for less!

Dear fashionistas,

Here’s a scoop about a new Calypso St. Barth boutique opening in Palo Alto. To celebrate, there was a panel event headlined by mom, wife, and entrepreneur Randi Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg alongside Power Pinner Christine Martinez and Honestly WTF Editor Erica Chan Coffman, provided tips to maintaining a balanced lifestyle managing family, business, and friends. You can check it out here.

Simple. Style.

Dear Fashionistas,

It’s that time of year again, the time of baby showers, weddings, and outdoor cocktail parties.   If you are anything like me, you don’t want to spend on something that you only wear once or twice.  So why not choose a piece that is simple yet can be transformed completely with accessories.  Here we have a fun and colourful ensemble designed to brighten you up, and help you look chic but not over dressed.  This outfit can literally take you from a baby shower in the afternoon to a cocktail party in the evening!  The great thing about this dress is that you can throw a denim jacket over it and pair it with cute, flat strappy sandals, and all of a sudden you have a trendy yet casual look.  Versatile is the word of the day, fashonistas!  So seek out pieces this spring that you can wear from a baby shower to the beach!

Let's Party

Dear Fashionistas,

It’s that time of year, when we start yearning for a mid-season getaway to a white sandy beach or a fabulous cruise ship. When it comes time to pack, it always seems like the kids suitcases are already lined up in the front hallway while your clothes are haphazardly strewn across the room and your suitcase lies forlorn and empty. Well girlfriends, at the bottom of this post, is a handy-dandy checklist to make packing for the tropics infinitely easier.

Now that you have your checklist in hand, let’s talk about specifics. Stick with the classics like a white and navy-striped tee, slim cotton jeans and crisp white cargo pants. Throw in some cotton dresses in your favourite colours (for inspiration, think fushia, turquoise, orange or yellow).  A great piece that can take you from the plane, to an excursion, to dinner on a cool night is a taupe cotton twill safari jacket.  And ladies, don’t forget to top off your look.  Choose to accessorize with beaded, silver or gold jewelry, pastel scarves or a colorful wide brimmed hat. Once you utilize these simple tips, you will find yourself cruising into spring with style.

Happy Valentine’s Day Fashionistas,

Every day should be Valentine’s day but let’s be honest with each other: between taking care of the kids, running errands, cooking, cleaning, working, volunteering on church committees and boards, one of the last things on our list is to plan a daily romantic rendevous with our significant other. So as Valentine’sday approaches, plan to spend some quality time with the one you love.

Reserve a table for two at your favourite restaurant, rent a romantic comedy to watch together later on and update your playlist to include your favourite romantic songs of all time. As for fashion, simplicity is key. Pull on a slip dress, neutral pumps and delicate gold jewlery for the finishing touch. Later on choose a satin and lace slip, cover it with an unconventional chunky knit sweater and spritz on Estee Lauder’s Beautiful or Ralph Lauren’s Romance.

You do not need to make or receive extravagant gestures (although they are quite nice). All you need is to find some quiet, romantic moments to connect with that person you’ve vowed to cherish; to take the time to hold hands and look into each others eyes; to take that opportunity to talk about the mundane things in your life and your dreams for each other. My very dear friends, all you need…is love.

Hey fashionistas,

When you look outside and the only thing you see is winter white, you need something to shake off those blahs and say “heck no” to those blankets of snow.  Hunter green, mustard and aubergine are the perfect colours to warm you up this winter.  Whether it costs a thousand bucks from Saks Fifth Avenue or ten bucks from your local thrift store, outfits in these colours will definitely work to brighten those winter blahs.

2012 Fashion Resolution

Happy New Year Fashionistas!
As we look at our bills from the Christmas season, we can’t help but make that dreaded resolution to cut back our expenses in the New Year. That means averting our eyes from the sale signs beckoning in store windows and convincing ourselves that we don’t need that gorgeous coat that’s 40% off. Well sisters, I’m here to help you stay strong. Grab a latte and let’s talk about some fall 2011 key fashion pieces that you most likely have in your closet. These five pieces are simple and chic, yet they’re dynamic enough to take you strutting into the spring season with style.
  1. Peter Pan Collar (here’s a hint, think removable collar)
  2. Tuxedo Jacket (classic Marlene Dietrich, a feminine yet strong look)
  3. Wide Leg Pant (a comfortable staple whether worn in wool or denim)
  4. High Slit Dress (whether it’s a valentine’s dinner with your beau or going to the opera, this takes evening wear to a more saucy level)
  5. Leather Harness Detailing (a little edge to your look goes a long way)
As for accessories, the doctor’s bag is still quite popular. And don’t forget, beauty goes hand in hand with fashion. So dress your lips with a beautiful coral colour; it seems to be the beauty experts colour of choice, just remember to choose the right shade for your skin tone. Well it’s been a blast my friends. Go forth, save money, look fabulous!!!

My Fashion pick for today shows us how to mix animal prints into a classic look.  During the fall season as we use browns, blacks, caramels etc. as our basics, it’s nice to throw on a piece that has a certain je ne sais quoi.  Animal prints can look tacky and trashy sometimes, but when you incorporate them moderately into a classic look, they work to make your outfit pop!  So epic readers, it’s now your turn to dish y’all, what is your signature fashion accent piece?

Wild Caramel Apple Inspirations!
